Reindeer Safari in Finnish Lapland: What to Expect on a Sleigh Ride

6 min read·June 2026·Lapland Finland Travels

What Is a Reindeer Safari?

A reindeer safari is a guided sleigh ride pulled by a reindeer through the snow-covered forests of Finnish Lapland, usually run from a working reindeer farm and led by a Sami or local herder. Where a husky safari is fast and noisy with the patter of paws on snow, a reindeer ride is slower and quieter — the animal sets an unhurried pace through the trees, and the experience leans more towards calm immersion in the Arctic landscape than adrenaline. It is one of the gentlest ways to experience the Lapland wilderness, and works well for travellers of any age, including young children and grandparents.

What Actually Happens on the Ride

Safaris typically begin at the farm with a short introduction to the herd and to reindeer husbandry — a tradition the Sami people have practised in this region for centuries. You are usually paired two-to-a-sleigh, wrapped in blankets, while the reindeer pulls you along a forest trail for somewhere between 1 and 3 kilometres, depending on the package. The herder walks or rides alongside, sharing background on the animals, the Sami way of life and how reindeer are managed through the seasons. The whole experience, including the farm visit before and after, usually runs 1.5 to 2.5 hours.

Meeting the Herd and Hearing the Sami Story

For many guests, the best part is not the ride itself but the time spent at the farm — feeding reindeer by hand, photographing the herd against the snow, and warming up afterwards with hot berry juice around a fire. A good guide will also explain the role reindeer herding plays in Sami culture and the practical realities of managing free-ranging herds across vast areas of Arctic wilderness — context that turns a nice photo opportunity into a genuine cultural experience.

What to Wear for a Reindeer Safari

Because you are sitting still in open air for the ride, cold sets in quickly: thermal base layers, a warm mid layer, and a windproof, insulated outer shell are essential, along with proper winter boots, mittens and a hat. Most operators provide a thermal oversuit, boots and gloves as part of the package, so personal base layers and warm socks are usually all you need to bring. See our Arctic layering guide for a full breakdown by body zone.

Best Time and How to Book

Reindeer safaris run through the snow season, broadly December to April, with deep snow and the most scenic conditions from January through March. This overlaps directly with peak Northern Lights season, so the ride is easy to combine with an evening aurora hunt on the same trip — many of our itineraries pair a daytime reindeer or husky safari with aurora hunting after dark. Reindeer safaris are popular with families and tend to book out around Christmas and New Year, so reserve your slot in advance if travelling over the festive period.
