Month-by-Month Guide

Best Time to Visit Finland

When to go for the Northern Lights, snow, Christmas, husky safaris or the midnight sun — a month-by-month guide to planning your Finnish Lapland trip.

The best time to visit Finland depends entirely on what you want to see. For the Northern Lights, snow and a white Christmas, travel between December and March. For autumn colours and milder aurora-watching, choose September to October. For the midnight sun, lakes and warm days, come June to August. Here is exactly what each month offers.

As a rule: the aurora season runs late August to early April, deep snow and full winter activities run December to March, Christmas in Lapland peaks in December, and the green summer season runs June to September. Our departures are timed across the whole calendar so you can match your trip to your goal.

Aurora season: late Aug – early April
Best snow + lights: December – March
Christmas magic: December
Autumn “ruska” colours: Sep – Oct
Midnight sun & lakes: June – August

Best time for the Northern Lights

The aurora is visible in Finnish Lapland from late August to early April. December to March gives the longest, darkest nights and the most dramatic snow scenery, while September–October offers milder weather and aurora reflections over open water. You need darkness and clear skies — not extreme cold.

Best time for snow and Christmas

For guaranteed deep snow, husky and reindeer safaris and Christmas magic, December to March is ideal. December is the most festive; January and February are the snowiest and best for activities; March adds longer daylight.

Best time for the midnight sun and summer

June to August brings near-24-hour daylight, warm days, open lakes and green landscapes — perfect for Helsinki, the lakes and our Finland & Estonia summer tour. There is no aurora in high summer because the sky never fully darkens.

“The autumn Ruska colours were absolutely stunning. Not what most people think of when they hear Lapland, but equally magical. Oulanka hiking trail was breathtaking and the guides were very knowledgeable.”

“This was my third trip to Lapland but first with Trekking Trails and honestly the best organised one by far. The glass igloo night was something else entirely — woke up at 2am to a full aurora display above us. Magic.”
