Oulanka National Park is one of Finland's most beautiful winter landscapes — deep snow, frozen rivers and pine forests bowed under thick white frost. This guided snowshoe tour takes you off the beaten track into the silence of it, on a gentle 4–5 km route to the famous Myllykoski rapids.
After getting equipped, you set off on snowshoes through the snow-covered forest, crossing the hanging bridge above the rushing water. No experience is needed — if you can walk, you can snowshoe. Pickup is available from Ruka & Kuusamo or as a day trip from Rovaniemi.
What the snowshoe tour is like
After a short briefing and equipment fitting, you walk on snowshoes through pristine snowy forest to the Myllykoski rapids, where a hanging bridge crosses the running water. The route is a gentle 4–5 km and takes about 3.5 hours including transfer — suitable for most fitness levels.
Do you need snowshoeing experience?
Not at all. Snowshoeing is one of the easiest winter activities to pick up — your guide shows you how at the start and all equipment is provided. It is a calm, low-intensity way to experience the national park in deep winter.
What to wear and bring
Dress for Finnish winter: thermal base layers, a warm mid-layer, an insulated jacket, warm waterproof boots, hat and gloves. Bring a camera — Oulanka in winter is spectacularly photogenic. Snowshoes and poles are included.
