Husky Safari in Finland: What to Expect on a Lapland Sled-Dog Tour
What Is a Husky Safari?
A husky safari is a guided sled ride pulled by a team of Alaskan or Siberian huskies through the snowy forests and frozen lakes of Lapland. It is one of the defining experiences of an Arctic winter — fast, quiet and exhilarating, with nothing but the sound of paws on snow and the runners gliding beneath you. A genuine safari (like the 5 km ride on our packages) is a proper journey through the wilderness, not a token loop around a car park.
Can You Drive the Sled Yourself?
Yes. After a short safety briefing, you can choose to "mush" the sled yourself — standing on the runners, working the brake, steering the team — or simply sit wrapped in blankets as a passenger while someone else drives. Most couples and pairs take turns. No experience is needed, and guides are with you the whole way, so it is genuinely beginner- and family-friendly.
Meeting the Dogs
For many guests the best part is not the ride but the time at the husky farm afterwards — warming up with a hot drink, meeting the dogs and, in season, the puppies. These are working athletes who genuinely love to run, and the connection with the team is a highlight people talk about long after the trip.
What to Wear for a Husky Safari
Sitting still on a sled in Arctic air gets cold fast, so layering matters: thermal base layers, an insulating mid layer, and a windproof outer shell, plus warm boots, mittens and a hat that covers your ears. On our tours we provide a full thermal oversuit, boots, gloves and a hat, so you only need to bring good base layers. See our Arctic layering guide for the full breakdown.
Best Time and How to Book
Husky safaris run through the winter snow season, roughly December to March — which is also peak Northern Lights season, so a single trip combines sled dogs, reindeer, snowmobiles and the aurora. On our packages the husky safari is built into the itinerary alongside evening aurora hunts, so everything is handled, briefed and guided.
Explore our husky safari packages to ride your own sled team and chase the Northern Lights on the same trip.
