The Western Balkans are Europe's last great road-trip frontier — a compact corner where the Adriatic and Ionian seas, Ottoman-era stone towns, glacial lakes and dramatic canyons sit within a few hours' drive of one another. In a single trip you can cross Albania, Montenegro, North Macedonia and Kosovo, and in 2027 we're running guided small-group journeys that do exactly that.

Why the Balkans, and why now

Fewer crowds, lower prices and astonishing variety. Where else can you walk a UNESCO-listed old town in the morning, taste local wine on a cliff-top road at lunch, and watch the sun set over an Adriatic bay by evening? The region is still refreshingly uncommercial — warm hospitality, hearty food and landscapes that feel genuinely undiscovered.

• Albania — the Adriatic and Ionian coasts, the UNESCO towns of Berat and Gjirokastër, the Albanian Riviera and the lakes of the east.
• Montenegro — the spectacular Bay of Kotor, medieval Budva, the royal capital Cetinje and the ancient ruins of Stari Bar.
• North Macedonia — UNESCO-listed Ohrid and its ancient lake, the monastery of St. Naum, the Matka Canyon and lively Skopje.

How long do you need?

It depends how much ground you want to cover:

• 5 days in Albania — the perfect first taste: Durrës, Berat, the Riviera, Sarandë, Gjirokastër and Korçë.
• 6 days across four countries — a fast, exciting loop through North Macedonia, Kosovo, Montenegro and Albania.
• 12 days, the grand tour — the complete Western Balkans, coast to canyon to lake, at a comfortable pace.

Best time to visit

May to October is ideal — warm, dry and made for coastal drives and old-town wandering. Our 2027 fixed departures run in early September, when the summer heat has eased but the sea is still swimmable and the light is golden.

What to know before you go

• Borders: these itineraries cross between Albania, North Macedonia, Kosovo and Montenegro. Check visa and entry requirements for your nationality before you travel.
• Walking: expect cobblestone streets, historic old towns and some uphill sections — comfortable shoes are essential.
• Pace: this is a road journey. Several days involve scenic driving between mountains, valleys and coast, with regular sightseeing and photo stops.
