Ruka vs Rovaniemi vs Saariselkä: Which Lapland Destination Is Best for Northern Lights?

6 min read·October 2025·Lapland Finland Travels

Why the Destination Matters More Than You Think

All three destinations are above the Arctic Circle. All three get the Northern Lights. But the experience — and the practicalities — are very different. The wrong choice can mean a crowded resort when you wanted wilderness, or a remote cabin when you needed airport transfers.

Rovaniemi — Santa's Capital

Rovaniemi (67°N) is the capital of Lapland and the most accessible entry point — it has its own international airport with direct flights from Helsinki, London and Amsterdam in winter. Santa Claus Village is here, making it essential for families. The downside: it's the most touristed and most light-polluted of the three.

Best for: First-time Lapland visitors, families with young children, Christmas-themed trips. Aurora hunting requires driving 20–30 km out of town.

Ruka-Kuusamo — The Wilderness Base

Ruka sits at 66°N above the Arctic Circle and is our operating base. It combines excellent infrastructure (Holiday Club resort, ski slopes, shops) with immediate access to genuine wilderness — Oulanka National Park is 30 minutes away. Kuusamo Airport has direct flights in season, or it's a 2.5-hour drive from Rovaniemi.

Best for: Active travellers who want husky safaris, snowmobiling, national park hikes AND Northern Lights. Our group packages operate from Ruka.

Saariselkä — Pure Arctic Remoteness

Saariselkä (68.5°N) is the most northerly and remote of the three, sitting near Urho Kekkonen National Park. Minimal light pollution, very dark skies, and a tiny fell village atmosphere. Access is via Ivalo Airport (30 min away). Infrastructure is limited compared to the other two — fewer activity providers and restaurants.

Best for: Experienced Lapland travellers seeking maximum solitude and the darkest skies. Also excellent for photography.

Quick Comparison

If this is your first Lapland trip and you want a mix of activities + aurora: Ruka. If you're travelling with children under 10 and Christmas magic matters: Rovaniemi + a night at Ruka. If you've been before and want pure wilderness: Saariselkä.
