Glass Igloo Finland: The Complete Guide to Sleeping Under the Northern Lights

6 min read·May 2026·Lapland Finland Travels

What Exactly Is a Glass Igloo?

A glass igloo is a small, fully heated cabin topped with a transparent thermal-glass dome. Despite the name, it has nothing to do with the snow shelters of the Arctic past — inside it is a warm, modern room with a real bed, an en-suite bathroom and, in most cases, Wi-Fi. The magic is the roof: a curved panel of heated glass that stays clear of frost and lets you lie in bed and look straight up at the stars and, on an active night, the Northern Lights.

Can You Really See the Aurora From the Igloo?

Yes — on a clear, dark night with geomagnetic activity, the aurora is visible directly through the glass roof. But the honest answer is that weather decides everything. Clouds over the igloo on a given night will block the view, which is why we never sell the igloo as your only aurora opportunity. We pair every igloo stay with separate guided aurora hunts earlier in the trip, so you have multiple chances across several nights rather than gambling everything on one window above one fixed point.

How Much Does a Glass Igloo Cost?

Glass igloos are a premium experience and the most in-demand accommodation in Lapland, so they command a premium price — typically far more per night than a standard hotel room. Rather than charge a steep stand-alone igloo rate, we build a glass igloo night into our Family & Couple and Winter Group packages so the cost is absorbed into a complete itinerary. You can also add an igloo night to any other package on request.

The Best Time to Book a Glass Igloo

For deep snow, long darkness and the strongest aurora odds, the December-to-March window is ideal. These are also the most heavily booked dates of the year — igloos are limited in number and the Christmas and New Year period sells out months ahead. If a glass igloo night is a priority, book your whole trip three to six months in advance.

Is It Worth It?

For honeymoons, anniversaries, milestone birthdays or simply a once-in-a-lifetime bucket-list night, almost every guest says yes. Falling asleep to a sky full of stars — and occasionally waking at 2am to green curtains rippling overhead — is the kind of memory that defines a whole trip. If your travel dates align with good aurora season and you book early, the glass igloo is the single most magical upgrade you can make.
